For further details on announcements of final teams etc are included later in the newsletter.

Friendly games:

August has not been a dull month on the friendly game calendar!  The month has seen mixed teams from the Section line up on more than one occasion against the Dutch Club who kindly hosted us in their pitch time, and mix with our counterparts in the Mens’ Section at the Padang on 2 separate occasions.

The ‘Quadrangular’, a friendly mini tournament is scheduled for Saturday 2nd September.  The Section is hosting this event on the Padang from 8.30am-12.30pm, followed by light lunch.  See further details later in this newsletter.

More friendly game opportunities will be coming your way in September via the Club’s SAS web invitation system. If you are not getting these email invitations, please let me know and I will fix it so you can!

A Reminder: If you play in a friendly match followed by an after-match reception, you are obliged to attend the post-match function as a matter of courtesy and will be billed for your share of any food/drink accordingly to cover costs, even if you choose not to attend the function.  If you can’t make it in time to play, you are still most welcome to attend post-match functions and will also be billed as a matter of equity.

Pre-season:

Just to reiterate our pre-season policy:

FORMAL PRE-SEASON TRAINING & TRY-OUTS FOR  LEAGUE SQUADS OFFICIALLY COMMENCES AT THE BEGINNING OF OCTOBER:

  • 2 astro turf sessions per week, including fitness work.
  • NO-ONE IS ENSURED A PLACE IN NEXT YEAR’S PREMIER LEAGUE SQUAD, or the team they were in before.
  • If you can’t commit to some or all the trainings for legitimate reasons (injury, clashes with classes or studies, exams, family, planned holidays etc) please let your former League team captain, or myself know AS SOON AS YOU CAN.  There will be no sympathy extended to people who choose not to communicate their circumstances and then expect special exceptions to be made for them.
  • Be aware that if you choose not to come to training, others WILL BE training for a spot in the team you may be interested in trying out for.   Our policy is quite simply this:  YOU TRAIN, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SELECTION TO PLAY.

SCC Ladies’ Hockey Quadrangular friendly tournament

The essence of this friendly tournament is to build friendship within the small fraternity of Ladies’ hockey. As hosts of the event, we are entering 2 teams, and have invited the Hollandse Club Ladies and Ceylon Sports Club (to be confirmed). Games are 9-a-side, 20 minutes one way* (to be confirmed), starting at 8.30am sharp and running through to 12.30pm at the Padang on Saturday 2nd September. Lunch and presentations will be held afterwards at the Marquee.  We urge you to show your support and come join us and our invited hockey friends for this event – especially if you haven’t picked up your stick since the end of the League.  A great way to ease back into hockey in preparation for pre-season.

Gabrielle Bell’s farewell match & JSM Parents’ Information Night

Section Senior, Premier Team Player and previous Section Vice-Captain, Gabrielle Bell, is leaving Singapore soon to travel in Europe and return home to Australia.  A Farewell match has been organised to bid our dear Gabby goodbye at 4.30pm on Saturday 9th September. There will be an after-match function and presentation at the Marquee at about 7pm, held in conjunction with the JSM Parents' Information Night.

The JSM Parents’ Information Night is a Whole Section event and new fixture on our social calendar.  The evening is designed to introduce JSMs and Parents to the Club; the Section, Senior Section members and Committee as we outline our YD programme for the following year in the interests of strengthening ties with our JSM and gaining the support of parents for the programmes we offer their children.  As such, the evening is not just for JSM and their parents, but also for Section Seniors to hear how the current Committee have addressed Youth Development in the Section.  Existing Section Seniors and Non-playing members with children who are interested are also welcome.

If you haven’t done so in the SAS web invitation comment box, please indicate to Selina: selinast@hotmail.com  if you will be bringing any partners or guests to Gabby’s farewell/ and to Jeanette: jeanetterach@gmail.com   re Parents Night for catering purposes.

JSM Committee
Many of you would be aware that the Ladies' Hockey Section has begun a new chapter in Youth Development. We have recruited many juniors over the last few years and now have a sizeable number.  The Section Committee feel that Youth Development should be more encompassing than just the development of hockey skills and view YD holistically to include character and social development.  In this respect, a Junior Sports Member (JSM) Committee consisting entirely of JSMs with Benita Tan and Josephine Ee from the Section YD Committee acting as advisors has been formed.  It is the Committee’s mandate to organize and run activities, social events and fundraising for the Section’s JSMs as their representatives.  The JSM Committee Members are:
·         Jeanette Lee, Wai Fong (Chairperson)
·         Nor Aishah Abas
·         Nur Azizah Kamaruddin
·         Natalya Han, Tang Li
·         Vimalatulasi Vetrievel
·         Naomi Lee, Pui San
JSMs are encouraged to approach members of the JSM Committee about JSM issues, concerns, questions, ideas for social events and fundraising, and to show their support for the work these girls are doing in representing the Section JSMs.

The Padang Shield

It's Padang Shield time again. For those new to the Section, the Padang Shield is an annual fixture the Club takes turns in hosting with co-Padang occupants the Singapore Recreation Club.  It involves a series of matches between each club’s sporting sections taking place over a day, at the end of which The Padang Shield is awarded to the overall winning Club.  SRC are the hosts this year.  The prestigious hockey match against our neighbours from the other end of the Padang, SRC, is taking place on Saturday 16th September, at 5pm. We need 14 players, including goalkeeper, and our team needs to be finalised by Monday 11th September. Those interested must attend training to be selected and should note we take this match very seriously!  The Mens’ team will be playing before us at 3.30pm for any interested Club supporters.

SCC International Hockey Sixes Tournament

A reminder: This FABULOUS tournament is on the weekend of Saturday 30 September- Sunday 1 October.  The Ladies’ Section is entering a team and selection trials have commenced in our fixed training slots for September.  Those not desiring to try out for the team are encouraged to help sell merchandise in the tournament village and come along to support the team and the Club. The formal request for volunteers has been sent out through the Club’s SAS system.  Email Karina: Karina_Churchill@hotmail.com  or Benita: benitatan@hotmail.com  if you didn’t get the email and to indicate your willingness to help.  Every hour or two you give back to your Club Section counts towards your membership renewal!

The Hollandse Club Wooden Shoe Tournament

The Hollandse Club Hockey Section is hosting the 14th edition of the Wooden Shoe Hockey Tournament. This unique intercultural one-day sport event will be held on the grounds of the brand new facilities of Hockey Village in Singapore on Saturday 7th October.  The tournament dates back to the early 90’s as a show of appreciation to the Singaporian hockey community Dutch hockey players can play field hockey on a competitive level in Singapore.

The set-up of the tournament is different than in previous years. This year teams are 6-a-side and matches will be played on 30m x 18m astroturf pitches. The tournament will be concluded with a fantastic BBQ party in the evening and a lucky draw with great prizes! Further details about the final program will be sent out once the Hollandse Club finalise them for their tournament website.

SCC Mens’ & Ladies’ Hockey Sections combined Awards Dinner

The Mens’ and Ladies’ Sections will be having a joint Awards Dinner this year on Friday 13th September at the Club Marquee.  Best players from our League teams and other Section members will be awarded for their efforts in the past year at the evening.  It also provides us a great chance to socialize with our counterparts from the Mens Section, to get together socially wearing something else other than sports gear and smelly shinguards, and to celebrate the game we all love and enjoy – Hockey!  Formal invitation to the event detailing start time, dress code, cost of tickets and so forth will be sent out very soon.
